Jacobo Grinberg was a scientist who worked with healers and shamans, his activities were combined between the academic and the esoteric. A scientist among shamans, a shaman among scientists.

Jacobo Grinberg-Zylberbaum was a Mexican neurophysiologist and psychologist, known for his research in shamanism, consciousness and parapsychological phenomena. He was born on December 12, 1946 in Mexico City and dedicated much of his life to exploring the intersection between science and the spiritual, seeking to understand how the human mind can influence physical reality.

Jacobo Grinberg investigated the possibilities of expanding human consciousness and developing mental potential. Among other things, he imagined the possibility of using telepathy.

Grinberg became deeply interested in shamanism after meeting Barbara Guerrero, known as Pachita, a shaman famous for her abilities to perform "psychic surgeries." This encounter had a significant impact on his life and work, leading him to document his experiences with her and other shamans in his book "Pachita." In his studies, Grinberg proposed the "synergic theory," which suggests that there is a neuronal energy field that interacts with an energetic field of time and space, allowing human beings to modify their reality.

The term "synergy" is a neologism coined by Grinberg to refer to the combination of three concepts: synthesis, synergy, and energy. In a pre-spatial structure of high synergy, there are no objects, gravitation, or time. In contrast, in a pre-space of low synergy, there are objects, time, and gravitational force.

The synergic theory postulates that the brain is capable of creating an energetic field (the neuronal field) that radiates from its organic structure and can expand into extracranial space. There it interacts with the energetic matrix of space-time, giving rise to a hypercomplex interference pattern that constitutes the energetic structure of experience. The interference pattern is decoded and transformed into conscious experience by the observer through the mediation of a “directionality factor.” The latter interacts with limited portions of the interference pattern and transforms them into specific experiences.

The shaman is the man/woman of knowledge par excellence, master of masters, creator of new lineages or guide of the lineage in which he was trained. He possesses the power and knowledge that allow him to exercise total control over his own consciousness, over matter, and over the mind and consciousness of others.

Grinberg not only formulated theories; he also participated in shamanic practices, consuming entheogenic substances and observing rites, which allowed him to integrate his lived experience with his scientific approach.

Grinberg explored various psychotropic substances, including:

  • Grinberg is reported to have frequently consumed LSD, suggesting an interest in its psychoactive effects and how these might influence perception and consciousness.

  • Although not explicitly mentioned in the results, ayahuasca is a plant mixture containing DMT and is traditionally used in shamanic ceremonies. Grinberg may have been exposed to this substance within the context of his research on spirituality and consciousness. 25

  • Similarly, mushrooms containing psilocybin are known for their entheogenic effects and have been used in rituals by various indigenous cultures. Their use is also linked to profound experiences of spiritual connection and expansion of consciousness.

Grinberg not only consumed these substances, but also studied their effects on human perception and how they might facilitate mystical or spiritual experiences. His integrative approach to these substances reflects his interest in understanding consciousness from multiple perspectives, including neuroscience and spirituality.
